#52 -The Hazelwood/Chrystal Cabin

From the book written in 1998....

The cabin belonging to Harry and Hazel Farish at Buccaneer Bay was built right after the Buccaneer Bay Holdings Co. was formed. The old Farish house at Echo Villa had become overrun with the female offspring of Harry (3 girls) and Revely (5 girls) so when the lot next door became available a new house was planned.

Bob McCombie built the house in 1961 - 1962. It was designed to contain many city slicker convienences like running water, inside biffy and shower. That was very controversial back then.

My favorite recollection from the building days was Bob McCombie's wonderful style with construction of the prefab house. The pieces were put together according to the plan but sometimes they didn't fit well. At that point Bob got out what he called his "finishing tool", a big mallet type hammer and smashed the pieces until they fit!

I also remember we girls horrified with the color Mother chose for the house, Pink and Black! We had quite an argument but she insisted. Feedback over the years has ranged from "garish to unique".

We were living in Los Angeles during those years and our trip to the Bay was always an interesting experience. We furnished the house with stuff from home because I was told things were less expensive in the States. So everything had to be of a size that could be stored in the van or the bow of the boat on the trailer and driven up the new Highway 5. When we each got our drivers licenses at 15 we were taught how to drive the "rig" (the van and boat trailer) so we could drive in turns and go straight through. I can attest that the drive on the LA to Canada freeway is exactly 24 hours.

The city like features of the house were often a thorn in the side. The whole Buccaneer Bay community is well aware of the water pump problems with our sand point way down on the beach and the need to pump up the bluff.  The pump and engine to run it had to be repaired or fixed so many times we have all lost count. The day that old pump engine died was a happy day for all of us at Buccaneer.

Despite the long drive and maintenance problems Mom ad Dad absolutely loved the Bay and for many years all our summer vacations were planned to come here. I remember one year (1965 or so) my Dad had a patient who was in charge of the box office at the Hollywood Bowl and could get us tickets to see the Beatles during their first North American tour. We kids were so excited until we found out the concert was the very week we were to come to the Bay, and that's what we did. What a sacrifice! I've never gotten over it.

After Hazel retired she divided her time between her condo in San Diego and the summer at the Bay. She loved it!  One improvement  of the city slicker variety was to screen in the front porch. Mom hated the mosquitoes. I have to admit it is an improvement we enjoy too.

By 1992 Hazel and Harry were both gone and Lee Anne, Joyce and Susie took over.  The house had become run down, so in 1993 a big campaign to paint the exterior and refashion the water system was mounted. The new water system is based on catching rain from the roof and less complicated. The old pink and black paint had to go for a more subdued,  blending in with the forest, paint job.

The house was never given a name so recently we chose to name our house Hazelwood;  in honor of our mother, Hazel Krause Farish.
