#47 -The Hill Cabin
From the book written in 1998....
Our family history begins in July of 1921, when my grandfather, Capt. Alfred Hailey rented the Kienlyside cottage (now Don Bennet's) for his wife Marion L (Hastings) Hailey and their five children; Alfred, Joe, Bob, Betty (Hailey) Hill and Daphine (Hailey) Wainwright. My grandparents were good friends with Calvert Simson, and were asked if they would like to spend their summers at the Bay. It was either going to be Savory Island or Buccaneer Bay. Well the rest is history or read site #45.
The summer of 1922 was spent up in Vaucroft as the cottage was being built. The move came late in the summer of 1922. A few years later my grandmother's sister Christine (Hastings) Bender bought site #46 so that she too could enjoy the Bay with my grand parents. Some of my earliest memories are going to her cottage in the morning for cookies. Walking by her window thinking she would be surprised to see me and ask me m.
By the time the company was formed in 1964, my mon, Betty (Hailey) Hill and my father Bob Hill had been sharing the Hailey cottage with my Uncle Alfred Hailey, Jr. and his wife Ellen for some time, when we had the choice of either site #44 or #47. They chose site #47 where we built in 1971. The totem poles on our front deck are a retirement gift from my brother Peter (1976). They are far from authentic as they were constructed with a chainsaw, by a Native Indian from Alberta. Five years ago my brother Michael bought a windmill palm tree for the front yard and has been growing like wild fire. My brother Brian has had many successful fishing trips and the one where he caught the 17 pound salmon still sticks in all of our minds. The most exciting day of course must be sports days and the most memorable one was the first sports day Danny, Briarr's son, had arrived to the Hill Clan. Peter had bought a special T-shirt "Daddies Little Tax Exception". Just before the land events Peter had to play with his new nephew, my sister-in-law Susie warned Peter that over the head motions would cause unsightly things to happen. Well as you guessed, Danny proceeded to change the color of his new T-shirt. I don't think Peter ever got to wear that T-shirt for sports day. Oh well.
Peter married Iris Sinclair on June 22, 1991, and Brian and Susi just celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary yesterday.
