#39 -The Finch Cabin

From the book written in 1998....

We understand that the original building was constructed when the store next door was being built (the McLaughlin cottage). Our cabin was used as a dwelling for the store keeper, to store goods and materials to be sold, and, for the earlier residents pleasure, as a dance hall!

Mr. Summers, the storekeeper lived there and it was then passed on to his step daughter Mable Rathbom and her family.

My parents, Margaret and Dick Jack, acquired shares to the site in 1964 when BBH was formed. The house needed considerable T.L.C.. The roof leaked badly and a lean-to attached to the south end was collapsing. With Joe Dunn's assistance and a general love of puttering, Dad lowered and replaced the roof, closed off the freight doors at the north end of the building to create an extra bunk room for his grandchildren, insulated, added propane and devised a very workable rain water collecting system.

My parents wanted to keep life at camp simple and stress free and they succeeded.  It was a haven for Lance and I and our children Andrea, Michael and Laura. Friendships were  established and many happy hours of playing at the beach, exploring the island and rainy day games became a wonderful pattern during their childhood. It was Mom's desire to  have a place for the family to gather and get away together.  Buccaneer Bay has been the perfect spot and there is now the beginning of a new generation to discover the delights of camp. We look forward to sharing these  experiences.
