#35 -The Shankel Cabin

From the book written in 1998....

Barry first came to Buccaneer as a guest of Peter McLennan (Dental Student wind up weekend). After we were married we both were invited to the Bay as guests of the McLennans and fell in love with this special place. When the opportunity came in 1973 to purchase this site, we were thrilled. At this time we were living in an apartment in Kitsilano, and this was our first acquisition. We purchased this site from Mr. Victor White. We knew that the previous cottage had been torn down and later discovered that there had originally been two cottages on this site. When we arrived, there was a vacant lot with a sleeping shed in the corner. Inside this shed were various souvenirs of the past, the most important of which was the kitchen stove, which is still in operation.

There were several wicker tables which we are told came from the old hotel at Vaucroft. For all you golf buffs, we found an old wooden Mashie, which still hangs beside our fireplace. I almost forgot, the outhouse was still standing and with a good cleaning, a new roof, and a coat of paint, it has served us well.

We are told that the two previous cottages belonged to the Kerrs (next to the Smiths) and the Townleys (next to the Carmichaels). Apparently the Kerrs was the first to be torn down, and when the Whites came to Buccaneer they stayed in the Townley cabin until it too was torn down.  There are still remains of this cabin to be found on the beach.

Lesley Cornwall was given the bricks from the fireplace, which can be found at the Comwalls new cottage. (I know as I helped move them from the Bernards to her new site.)

We started the process of building our cabin in 1974 when the original section of the cabin went up. Over the years as the family grew, rooms were added and a true architectural mish mash evolved. Our cabin will probably always be a work in progress as we try to personalize our little corner of this special place.
