#22 -The Barry Davidson Cabin
From the book written in 1998....
In the early 1900's, WB. Davidson Sr. rented a site at Buccaneer Bay from Calvert Simson described as Four West of the Blair House. (now known as the Gordon Davidson cabin)
Because of their love of Buccaneer and the necessity of sharing the original family cabin, Bill and Boo Davidson took the opportunity to buy the Luthwaite cabin in the early 1950's. The cabin was built with beach combed lumber and shakes. Bill subsequently totally reconstructed, renovated, and rebuilt it. This included having his uncle Mac McCullough build a new fireplace. (Mac also built many of the exiting fireplaces in Buccaneer Bay cottages - as well as farming with his wife May. They also lived in the Elizabeth Bennett house. )
In the fall of 1959, the renovated cabin burned to the ground leaving only the fireplace standing - which by the way remains today! The fire also took Irene Smith's. By the quick action of Tag Nygard, Joe Simson, Les O'Neill and Bill Davidson, the Marion cabin was sacrificed by pushing it into the fire with Tag's loader, creating a fire break. With constant surveillance by the above plus Tim Koepke and Barry Davidson, the road house, now Carmichael's was saved.
Shortly after the smoke cleared, the sites were cleaned up and reconstruction plans started. The Marions relocated and built a new cottage - now Ken Allen's. Due to Bill's friendship with Will McLaughlin, M. B. King Lumber Co. provided most of the lumber to build the Davidson's, Macdonald's, Nana Smith's on the old Marion site, and the new Marion cottage down the beach. All lumber was delivered on site and the contractor, Bill McCombie, lived in the Mather's cabin during construction. The cottages were ready by the summer of 1960.
Sports Day was reinstituted in the early 1950's. The morning of Sports Day, the bugle would sound from the Marks house ( Farrow - Nagle). All events were held on the front beach both land and water - as there wasn't a playing field in those days. The prize giving and dinner was on the badminton court behind Nana Smith's (MacDonald's). Being next door, I remember our oven was full of hot dog buns and there were wash tubs full of kool-Aid. The adult party at night was usually at our place and sometimes the birds were singing when the last people left.
