#14 -The Bennett Cabin
From the book written in 1998....
As far back as I can remember Site 14 was owned by Agnes Ingley. Although Agnes had lost her husband and son in a boating accident, she gave the grandchildren of her good friend and neighbor Betty Bennet the love she would have given her own. We called her Aunt Agnes.
When her cottage at Buccaneer Bay became too much to keep up and she offered it for sale, my brother John and I convinced our Dad to buy it with us.
Agnes had painted her kitchen turquoise (a color my mother couldn't live with) and our first act as new owners was to paint the kitchen beige. Although the cottage was quaint, it was very basic and had fallen into disrepair and so my brother and I set to work installing a pump, generator, septic system, moving out buildings, replacing a roof and repairing extensive carpenter ant damage in our sleeping cabin.
However a thorough examination of our front cabin revealed that the carpenter ants had eaten through almost every piece of wood. Although we loved the old fieldstone fireplace, the beach sand mortar had cracked and without flue liners the chimney was beyond repair and so we set about to replace the old cabin with a new structure. During the process of obtaining a building permit we realized the quaint old cabin built on tree stumps could not be replicated. Building code rules would have to be consulted and followed. It has been 10 years since a very long process was started and we are one hand rail away from a final building permit. (Although finishing touches will go on for some time to come) And I hope our place will be something children (and someday their children) will enjoy for many years to come.
